The Devil says, “Listen, kid. Here’s the secret. Whenever you’re on the road or a stranger in a strange land, always remember you are the dark horse, that unknown factor, which means that any time you enter any room you can be absolutely anything to anyone because when it comes right down to it, unless you tell them, who the fuck is gonna know any different?”
He slams back his drink and motions to the bartender for another.
“Take her for example,” he says, nodding behind him, “Who do you think she’s waiting for, hmmm?”
You look over your shoulder and only have a second to take in the pretty blond sitting at a table by herself before he slaps you hard on the back and roars –
“SURE THE FUCK ISN’T YOU!”
Then he points to your reflection in the mirror on the other side of the bar.
“But him? Him?” He gives your shoulder a gentle squeeze. “That guy. He could be anyone.”
Yeah, I’ve been talking to the devil all week and you know what? He’s starting to make sense.
